Multiple Sclerosis or MS is a disorder in which the protective covering of the central nervous system is lost, a process known as demylination. The process of demeyination effects the ability of the nerve to transmit impulses. These areas where myelin is lost are known as plaques and are found throughout the brain and spinal cord. This condition is found primarily in younger individuals with symptoms that are dependent on where the plaques form. Symptom presentation ranges from weakness and paresthesias (tingling) to visual disturbances and mood changes. It is common for symptoms to flare under stress. Remission can follow symptom presentation. Acupuncture is employed to reduce the frequency of flaring as well as visual disturbances. Remission in some cases can be over prolonged periods of time.
