It is often said that form follows function. In our bodies, it could be said that form dictates function.

Thus, we ought to consider how our form originates. Remarkably, our bodies continuously self-assemble from within. This amazing feat so often admired in embryogenesis never stops throughout our lives.

While this system is quite robust, the structural balance can be compromised by imbalanced use or by overwhelming traumatic force. In a healthy, unrestricted system structural balance can be regained. As tissues heal and are appropriately returned to use, they remodel and resume their original functions. The rest of the system resumes prior structural and functional relationships with the once damaged part, and the nervous system confidently re-incorporates it into moment-to-moment activities.

However, the recovery process does not always unfold to completion. The same aggravating factors that can initiate imbalance in an area (improper use or damage) may also impact recovery, thereby limiting outcomes. Compensatory patterns are developed to shunt forces away from the region, and injury-related adjustments do not always subside after the tissue has healed. Normal mechanical stimulation of tissue is inhibited and the nervous system falls into dysfunctional patterns of avoidance. Meanwhile, excessive forces are redirected to other regions which may then suffer injury.

Acupuncture provides a method for engaging the body’s self-assembly mechanisms for internal self-regulation. It targets inhibition of resting muscle at strategically aligned areas, urging the system to rediscover more natural movement patterns. Temporary analgesic effects manage pain and allow the nervous system to settle during these movements. Anti-inflammatory effects help remove lingering impediments to tissue remodeling, allowing the local structure to finally re-adapt.

Acupuncture needles allow an acupuncturist direct access to these critical regions/zones for internal self-regulation. The body is required to abandon old patterns of neuromusckulosketal activation and learn new and appropriate patterns, as well as default to a pre-injury/illness state of health.
