FAQ's On The Benefits Of Acupuncture Treatment

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a treatment involving insertion of very small needles just under the skin to stimulate a healing response in the body. Acupuncture is a component of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a multi dimensional approach to treatment utilizing herbal medicine, massage, movement exercises and diet and life-style counseling.

Does it hurt?

Acupuncture is usually a very comfortable procedure. There may be a noticeable pinch upon insertion of the needle which quickly passes. After that, there are sometimes tingling or slight aching sensations at or distant to the site of insertion. Most patients find acupuncture very relaxing and many fall asleep during treatment. Always tell your acupuncturist if the treatment is uncomfortable as there are steps that can be taken to make it more comfortable.

What are the risks of acupuncture treatment?

With any piercing of the skin there is risk of infection or damage to underlying structures. Acupuncture needles are much thinner and more flexible than the hypodermic needles most people have experience with and are much less likely to cause these problems. Acupuncturists are thoroughly trained in prevention and management of any adverse effects of needling and must pass a Clean Needle Technique certification exam which was developed by the acupuncture profession in cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control. Acupuncturists on our staff have been instructors and examiners for Clean Needle Technique Certification.

Do you re-use needles?

At Seattle Acupuncture Associates all needles are used once and safely discarded after treatment. We never re-use acupuncture needles.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture works by giving a mild stimulation to the body which encourages a response. The acupuncturist can thereby have a ‘conversation’ with the body over several sessions during which the treatment helps to overcome habitual or traumatic patterns which are causing pain or discomfort.

Should I stop my medications?

While acupuncture can help people reduce the need for some medications, it is important to proceed carefully to avoid problems. Any prescribed medicine should be modified under the direction of your physician. We are happy to consult with your physician about what to expect and our recommendations for adjusting or discontinuing medications.
